We Need To Rethink Cheese Curls

We Need To Rethink Cheese Curls

My name is Danny Palumbo and I'm from Pennsylvania, home to Herrs, Utz, Snyders, Wise, Middleworths, Martins, Gibles and many more. In short, this is where the chips live, my dear. And even though I no longer live in the Keystone State, I still have a deep appreciation for potato chips. In this column I cover some of the best this country has to offer. Welcome to the land of chips!

My love for wild and wonderful cheese cannot be overstated. From crunchy, gooey Cheetos to the beloved Utz Cheese Ball Pools to Jalapeno Popper Her Cheese and everything in between, cheese puffs rule the roost. So when I found an interesting regional brand that I hadn't tried yet, I called to check it out. That's what I do here in Chip Land.

New Orleans has a favorite brand of cheese curds that I've never heard of before. The brand is Elmer's (like glue, yum!) and the product is called CheeWees. Personally, I want to eat a product called CheeWees; I think I have a dog that was a good boy. The suspender-wearing mascot cartoon mouse is proof that these things have been around since 1943, but his name is Elmer . Elmer! When was the last time you heard of Elmer? I only want to see this name on tombstones, not stuck on packages of delicious food that cost me money.

I smiled reading the company's Wikipedia page very quickly.

During the Great Depression, the Elmer brothers developed a corn-based cheese snack. In 1939, sales manager Elmer Morrell M. Elmer Sr. He held a contest to name the famous rolled cheese in New Orleans and the winner was Chewies.

Morrell M. A skinny baron named Carl Elmer Sr. ditched the straps and the snacking contest seemed appropriate in 1939 New Orleans.

Now, I don't live in Louisiana, but I found a bag of Elmer's Green Onion Chews at a corner store/liquor store in T City, LA. I also found Pennsylvania-based Herr Chips at my local Autozone the other day. Local snacks are everywhere now. How long to live?

Basically, they're fried Cheetos, but they taste better than fried Cheetos. Since they are baked in the oven, they have less fat and saturated fat per serving than grilled cheese, and slightly more fat than grilled Cheetos. A little increase in fat content makes them taste better.

The scallion flavor glides over your tongue with a subtle sharpness. Onions add another flavor that I've never experienced before in a savory breakfast, let alone barbecue. Why not get some onion-flavored curd cheese? Aren't cheese and onions a powerful combination? For some reason, potatoes have dominated the onion market. Chip Dip is also prepared to infuse your fries with a strong onion flavor. Meanwhile, the taste of roasted guinea pigs is a breath of fresh air.

Ellmer's also has flavors like barbecue and pizza that usually go with potato chips instead of grilled cheese. It makes me think that we need to marry both categories more often. Who knows what great snacks we've missed?

I will be true. CheeWees are no better than Cheetos. But you know what? Elmer's Green Onion Chews are light, crunchy and flavorful, and this is a no-brainer for a no-frills snack.
